Grimbald

Saint Grimbald (or Grimwald) (827 – July 8, 901) was a Benedictine, invited to England by King Alfred the Great in 885. King Alfred met Grimbald while journeying to Rome at the French abbey of Saint-Bertin (Saint-Omer). Grimbald arrived in England and declined the see of Canterbury, preferring to remain a monk. He became the abbot of the New Minster at Winchester appointed by King Edward the Elder. Grimbald is credited with restoring learning to England.
